Use Caution! Dig Safely!

Delmarva Power Urges You to Dig Safely
Utility Advises Residents, Others to Call 811 Before Digging

With warmer weather here, Delmarva Power reminds homeowners and others working outdoors to call 811 before they dig.

Natural gas, electricity, cable television, water, sewer and telephone lines are commonly buried underground, making it necessary to know where those lines are in order to prevent them from being struck and damaged by digging.

This year, May has been designated as National Safe Digging Month to recognize the one-year anniversary of the national call-before-you-dig number – 811. When 811 is called from anywhere in Delmarva Power’s service territory, the call is routed to the local Miss Utility center where operators will ask for the location of the digging job. Then, within a few days, an individual locator will be sent to the digging site to mark underground utility lines. This is a free service.

It is important to call 811 at least two days before the scheduled dig. If unauthorized digging occurs and causes harm, the property owner may face stiff fines.

Remember, safe digging means calling Miss Utility before each job, whether you are a professional excavator or a homeowner. Each state has different laws for digging, so visit
www.call811.com for state-specific information.

May is Older Americans Month

Older Americans Month dates back to 1963 when President John F. Kennedy designated May as "Senior Citizens Month." In 1980, President Jimmy Carter renamed it to Older Americans Month, as it has been known since.

Older Americans Month has traditionally been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country. This year's theme for Older Americans Month is "Working Together For Strong, Healthy and Supportive Communities."

Advances in medicine, public health and related technologies have made it not uncommon for people to live well beyond 90 years. People 65 and older are one of the fastest growing groups in the country.

In the true tradition of Older Americans Month, CHEER is planning a special celebration for the "mature adults" of Sussex County. There will be a luncheon and entertainment program with popular D.J. Sky Brady at the CHEER Community Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road, Georgetown, DE, Friday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Every "seasoned citizen" of the Delmarva area is invited.

Tickets are only $5 for ages 60+ and $6 under 60. For more information or to purchase your ticket call Florence Mason or Joey Sapienza 302-856-5187.
